What is the best small car today? With the current economic climate small cars are becoming much more important to everybody.
In Britain since 1988 fuel costs have more than doubled forcing people to drive more economically and buy more economic cars. Gone are the days where you could fill up your car with an hour’s wages. If you include inflation therefore making it appear in real terms, according to the RAC since 1988 it is around 18% cheaper on average to buy and run a car when including petrol costs. The real trouble starts though when you look at more recent figures. With the UK government heavily increasing car tax on larger cars especially 4×4’s and increasing fuel duty taxes which affects the larger cars with a lower MPG a lot more. When you add in the effect of negative growth in the economy motoring for a UK resident is getting a lot more difficult. This is why I have set up this blog to help educate on economic driving the best small car in terms of both fuel efficiency and fun.
So what is the best small car? With car manufacturers seeing such expansion in the small car market there seems to be new cars being launched every week. Being launched in September 08 the new Ford Fiesta has received huge praise in its reviews and quite rightly so. It has to be the second most beautiful car in its class. Beaten only by the Alfa Romeo Mito which some people find disgusting but I am currently obsessed with. The Fiesta shares many features with the Mazda 2 another very good-looking car. The fiesta though feels much more refined and has a much higher build quality inside the cabin. This is reflected in the higher price of the Fiesta, but as with everything you pay your money you take your choice. If you look into fuel economy the Fiesta Econetic can achieve a huge 76 miles per gallon. Instead of adding complicated electronics and hybrid technology Ford have created a very simple and efficient 1.6 diesel engine. Which can still deliver adequate performance on motorways and A roads when needed. With the Fiesta due to to launch in America in 2010 Ford really may have found their saviour in such a difficult time from any car companies.
